Regional Police Seize Firearms, Prohibited Weapons, Drugs In Ongoing Investigation
Waterloo Region, Ontario – Waterloo Regional Police have arrested 30 people and seized several firearms, prohibited weapons, and illegal drugs as part of an ongoing investigation into the increased violent activity and illicit drug trade in Cambridge.
The four-month investigation, which was led by the Waterloo Regional Police Service’s Drugs and Firearms unit, Criminal Intelligence unit, and General Investigations unit, resulted in nine search warrants being executed – eight in Cambridge and one in Kitchener. In total, 30 individuals, between the ages of 17 and 59, were arrested and 68 Criminal Code charges, 41 Controlled Drugs and Substances Act charges, and six Provincial Offence charges laid. Charges include Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking, Possession of Stolen Property Over $5,000, Carry Concealed Weapon, Possession of Prohibited Weapon, Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm, and Trafficking,
“The number of weapons, ammunition, and illegal drugs seized during this investigation is concerning to us and to the community,” said Bryan Larkin, Chief of Police. “We have a significant drug addiction problem in our Region, and beyond, which is driving a significant amount of crime and public disorder. I want to assure the community that our police service is committed to solving these crimes and to disrupting illegal drug trafficking and the street level violence that is associated with the drug culture.”
We Can't Arrest Our Way Out Of This...
Chief Larkin stressed that the situation will worsen without help from multiple levels of government, community services as well as assistance from the general public. "We cannot simply arrest our way out of this situation--we need assistance. These arrests are a good start," said Larkin.
